Government to disinfect 137 markets in Accra on Monday against coronavirus
2 min read

In a measure to curb the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19) in Accra and Ghana, The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development has made the arrangement to spray and disinfect markets in Accra. 137 markets will be closed down on Monday and disinfected.

According to the Ministry, the closure of the markets mirrors the Presidential directive coordinated by the Metropolitan Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDA) to enhance the conditions of hygiene in markets across the country.

Even though this is needed and laudable, we can’t agree that it is enough to ensure the hygienic condition of many of our markets which are full of rubbish, lacks hygienic and clean public toilets, some stinking with choked gutters and crowded.

We pray that the Government, The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly and other institutions involved would ensure the cleanliness and hygienic conditions of our markets and not only when there is a threat to life in situations like this coronavirus pandemic.
