Accra, Ghana – Thursday, July 2, 2020,/ https://africanpostonline.com/ To avoid ruining a garment or cloth, we must read the labels. Unfortunately, we are most likely to ignore this vital information which will enable us to maintain the beauty and longevity of the fabric.
I remember the day my sister cried because she was going to a friend’s wedding and in a rush burnt her dress. She was already late for the wedding, and that was the most beautiful dress fit for the occasion. She had to get a nearby tailor to patch the garment.
She forgot to read the label in the dress and ironed the satin part with a hot iron. That woke me to the importance of labels in dresses.
Checking every detail on the label is critical to arm oneself with the knowledge of how it should be handled, starched, washed or ironed.
Even if we read the label, we are only likely to pay attention to the size of the dress. Also, most of us are ignorant of the various types of fabrics and the specific type of laundry care to give it.
We are all guilty of choosing particular apparel because we are in love with the colour or the design. Or sometimes because it flatters our figure.
Apart from the textiles, apparels are made from a variety of stuff as well with added accessories like beads, pearls, ribbons, and crystal stones.
Some well-known fabrics used in making clothes for this part of the world may include silk, rayon, satin, cotton, wool, cashmere and even leather.
Mostly, the labels in apparels have the instructions. They may be stated plainly or represented with symbols. The excitement of owning a dress you’ve been dreaming about can make you forget this detail until it is too late.
Not all textiles have to be pressed with a hot iron. It is important to draw the line between ironing a dress and ironing with low heat.
Laundry practices are also imperative in maintaining your favourite dress. Be sure to know how to mix clothes while washing them. Always wash like colours and avoid mixing clothes of different textures. Mostly, velour fabrics are likely to run their colour.
Also, you will be aware if to bleach a fabric or the right type of washing agent to use.
We need to keep them for as long as it can get. Paying attention to simple washing and ironing techniques would ensure a longer-lasting dress and value for money.
