The Coup

Colonel Goita Assimi in August 2020 overthrew the elected president of mali Ibrahim Boubacar Keita.

Goita alleged that the reasons for the coup are due to corruption and the incompetency of Keita to stop bloody jihadist activities.

President Bah Ndaw and Prime minister Moctar Ouane were appointed as transitional leaders due to pressure from ECOWAS.

However, soldiers detained transitional President Bah Ndaw and Prime Minister Moctar Ouane claiming they had resigned but later on Thursday released them.

Goita on Friday was named the transitional president by the constitutional court which eventually led to Mali’s suspension from ECOWAS.
