The vice president of Ghana Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia says that the government, with the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), had started processes to convert National ID numbers into Tax Identification Numbers (TIN) for easy payment of taxes.
Vice President Bawumia made these remarks at a forum organized by the National Youth Wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Accra on Wednesday.
“In fact, less than three million people in Ghana have a TIN number and so we have decided that we are going to make sure that almost everybody as much as possible has a TIN number. How are we going to do this, it’s quite straight forward. All national ID numbers will be converted to TIN numbers start January”.
He says the move was inspired by persons and businesses that could not provide their TIN numbers in order to receive aid from the government offered due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The national ID card will become the anchor for formalizing the economy as well as integrating existing database. Very recently as we tried to allocate certain resources for COVID more businesses were asked to apply, individuals were asked to apply for these reliefs from government. People were asked “what is your TIN number?” and many people did not have a TIN number,” he explained.
According to him, the government has decided that starting January all citizens who do not have a TIN number will have one because the government has made arrangements with the GRA and other institutions to convert it into a TIN.
He added that the move would increase the number of taxpayers from less than three million currently to 16 million and increase revenue generation.
“With that particular policy that the president has asked us to undertake, suddenly Ghana will move from less than three million people with tax numbers to about six million by the end of the year and that changes the entire revenue generation capacity of the country.
The Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) is a special identification number issued by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) to taxpayers and potential taxpayers.
