ACCRA, Ghana – Tuesday, June 23, 2020/ https://africanpostonline.com/—The Church of Saint George located in Lalibela, Ethiopia, is one of eleven rock-hewn monolithic churches in Lalibela, a city in the Amhara Region of Ethiopia.
The historical and religious masterpiece was carved from a type of volcanic tuff and date back to the 12th or early 13th century AD making it one of the few pre-colonial Christian churches in Africa.
King Gebre Mesqel Lalibela of the Zagwe dynasty regarded as a saint by the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church commissioned its construction.
The 15m-high three-tiered plinth in the shape of a Greek cross has no internal pillars. Inside, there are two 800-year-old olive-wood boxes (one with opposing corkscrew keys) believe to contain the church’s treasures and a small baptismal pool outside the church.
Many people argue that the existence of the church from 12th or early 13th century AD is proof that Christianity existed in Africa as established in the Holy Bible and not introduced by the colonial masters and their claim is a distorted history.
Lalibela is a pilgrimage site for members of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church; the church itself is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
