President Akuffo-Addo has commended the Electoral Commission for successfully compiling the new voters register ahead of the December 2020 polls.

According to him, this year’s voter registration exercise is by far the “most credible in the history of Ghana.”  Delivering his 15th address to the nation on the government’s response in the fight against COVID-19, President Akuffo-Addo said, the exercise is sufficient proof that Ghana’s democratic entities have what it takes to fulfill their constitutional mandate regardless of the circumstances surrounding it.

“Fellow Ghanaians, the remarkable nature of us, the Ghanaian people, the first colonised people in sub-Saharan Africa to gain their freedom and independence from foreign rule, is manifesting itself again. In the midst of the pandemic, we have been able to compile a voters’ register, arguably, the most credible voter register in our history; our democratic institutions continue to function effectively.”

The President also commended the Ghanaian people for coming out in their numbers to perform their civic responsibility. He added that, by doing this, Ghanaians have shown their commitment in making this country a beacon of democracy.

‘The Ghanaian people have, by the conduct of this exercise, demonstrated our commitment, once again, to consolidating our status as a beacon of democracy on the continent and in the world.”

Nana Addo also admitted to “incidents of violence” at some registration centres and condemn the acts. He also charged the police to bring the perpetrators to book. However, he noted that the exercise was generally peaceful.

“There were, nonetheless, deeply regrettable, isolated incidents of violence, which I condemn unreservedly, and which I expect the Police to deal with without fear or favour, but the exercise was generally peaceful.”

The Electoral Commission registered a total of 16.6 million voters in the new electoral. Nonetheless, the commission recorded a number of multiple registrations at some registration centers and has tasked a 16-member audit committee to manually determine the cases of multiple registrations.
