ACCRA, Ghana – Monday, June 1, 2020/ https://africanpostonline.com/—President Nana Akufo -Addo has added his voice to other African leaders to condemn the killing of George Floyd, an African American in the United States of America.
A statement by President Akufo-Addo express shock and painful memories describing the event as wrong in the 21st century.
He wrote, “Black people, the world over, are shocked and distraught by the killing of an unarmed black man, George Floyd, by a white police officer in the United States of America. It carried with it an all too painful familiarity and an ugly reminder. It cannot be right that, in the 21st century, the United States, this great bastion of democracy, continues to grapple with the problem of systemic racism.”
He extends deep condolences to the family and loved ones of the late George Floyd on behalf of the people of Ghanaians.
“We stand with our kith and kin in America in these difficult and trying times, and we hope that the unfortunate, tragic death of George Floyd will inspire a lasting change in how America confronts head-on the problems of hate and racism.” He added.
Former President of Ghana, Jerry John Rawlings and Chairperson of the African Union, Moussa Faki Mahamat have already condemned the killing of George Floyd and called for the killing of blacks in America to end.
George Floyd was killed by Derek Chauvin on May 25, 2020, by a white police officer, together with three other officers. George Floyd was handcuffed and Chauvin knelt on his neck for 8 minutes causing his death. Floyd in the process pleaded for his life that, “I can’t breathe”.
In light of the event, violent protest continues for 6 nights across the US coupled with the burning of buildings and cars, injuries, deaths, looting and arrest of protesters.
