ACCRA, Ghana – Tuesday, June 2, 2020/ https://africanpostonline.com/—The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Rwanda has recalled two Belgian diplomats. The news was confirmed in a statement on Tuesday, June 2 by the government. According to the statement released, the two diplomats organised a commemoration ceremony a day before the official mourning day and without informing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as it is the practice.
However, the National Mourning Ceremony for the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi is commemorated every 7th of April and by the governments’ authority and interested parties.
“The government of Rwanda protested to the government of Belgium, which decided to recall the two diplomats.” Naphtal Ahishakiye, executive secretary of genocide survivors’.
Furthermore, the foreign affairs ministry said. “Some of the key symbols used during commemoration ceremonies like the lowering of the national flag to half-mast are provided for by the law and thus cannot be done without following the right procedure,”
The Rwanda genocide was a civil war, also known as the genocide against the Tutsi was a mass slaughter of Tutsi and some moderate Hutu in Rwanda between 7 April and 15 July 1994.
An estimated 500,000 to 1,000,000 Rwandans were killed of which 70% were of the country’s Tutsi population.
