Speaker Launches 2020-2024 Corporate Strategic Plan of Parliament

The Speaker of Parliament Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye on Thursday officially launched the 2020-2024 Corporate Strategic Plan of Parliament on the theme “Corporate Strategic Planning as a tool for unlocking the capacity of legislatures”, at the Speaker’s Lounge in Job 600.

The colourful ceremony which attracted various high-profile personalities of the House including the two Deputy Speakers, Majority and Minority Leaders, the House Whips and the Clerk coincided with a courtesy call on the Rt. Hon. Speaker by the Board of STAR Ghana Foundation.

Speaker Launches 2020-2024 Corporate Strategic Plan of Parliament

The Foundation led by Professor Audrey Gadzekpo, a research and advocacy on media, gender and governance was in the House to announce the completion of Phase II of the STAR-Ghana programme, which ends this year and has placed a greater focus on achieving strategic and systemic level impacts with focusses on support to targeted units of the House.

Clerk to Parliament Mr. Cyril O. Nsiah in his presentation disclosed that the 2020-2024 Strategic Plan provides a framework for the realisation of the vision of Ghana’s Legislature being a model Parliament that shall work towards securing for citizens and posterity the blessing of liberty, equality of opportunity and prosperity

He added that the Plan among its various objectives seeks to build on the achievements and lessons learnt from the implementation of successive plans since the inception of the Fourth Republic including increased public participation in the legislative process and enhanced research and administrative support for Members of Parliament.

According to Mr. Nsaih, the Strategic Plan further consisted of improved ICT infrastructure, establishment of the Parliamentary Training Institute (PTI), office space for Committees in their oversight work, and the completion of the Job 600 Office Complex for Members of Parliament.

Speaker of Parliament Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye, delivering the key note address eulogised STAR-Ghana Foundation for its immense contribution to the House and support to Parliament over the years and appealed to the Foundation to continue to support and build the capacity of the Legislature.

He hoped the collaboration would lead to enhancing the effectiveness of Parliament to discharge its constitutional and inquisitorial mandate and contribute in the long run to deepening and consolidation of democratic governance.

The Speaker stressed that this would help strengthen Parliament’s capacity to effectively fulfil its legislative oversight and representational roles and contribute to the deepening and consolidation of democratic governance and expressed the hope that STAR-Ghana would continue to provide more support to strengthen the other departments of Parliament.

Professor Audrey Gadzekpo on behalf of the Board/Chair of STAR-Ghana said the Foundation recognises Ghana’s Parliament as a key strategic partner in national development and will continue to provide grants and technical support to target grantees of Parliament, the leadership of the House and selected oversight committees and the Parliamentary Service as a whole.

She added that the STAR-Ghana Programme has effectively partnered Ghana’s Parliament since 2010 under both Phases of the programme and would therefore continue to support the creation, utilisation and institutionalisation of spaces for collective civil society engagement.
