The African Union has launched a campaign aimed at silencing the use of guns in Africa

The campaign which targeted the youth was launched virtually today under the theme; “Advancing Youth Roles and Capacities to Silence the Guns in Africa”.

Speaking at the event, Commissioner of Human Resources, Science and Technology at the AU, Prof. Sarah Anyang Agbor said that the campaign is to educate the African youth to silence unemployment and illiteracy.

“Silencing the guns means providing public education for youth in Africa: young people as leaders to shape the future in education and infrastructure. We silence unemployment, illiteracy and give voice to young people”, she said.

The Chair of the AUPRC Edward Makaya said that “advancing youth roles to silence the guns in Africa there should be more collaboration within the youth. We need to ensure the empowerment of young women and men; advocate for equal participation of women”.

Amb. Joel Nkrurabagaya of Burundi also emphasized the need to empower the youth; ensure their participation in peace and development in Africa. He also highlighted the importance of promoting peace and security.

There was also a call to include young people in government by allowing them to participate and for them to act as agents of change. There were special calls to the young women to support their initiative, their talents and skills in creating the desired Africa.

It was concluded by Emma Ng’ang’a that “our voices are our weapons; We need to Speak Up against systematic marginalization; gender disparities; take responsibilities for peace and development agenda and move as one voice. Say no to division along Ethnic, Tribal &Religious lines that continue two divide us”.
