The infrastructure debate; is it even necessary?
The infrastructure debate; is it even necessary?

In an election year, it is expected that political parties in this country will announce their policies and engage with the electorates more often to solicit for their votes. This year is no different. Even though we have a global pandemic hanging around our nostrils literally, political parties still find ways and means to engage with their party faithful.

However, there has been an interesting debate in the past few days over infrastructural developments in the country. The banter is obviously between the two political parties who have had the privilege to take turns in government in the fourth republic, the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the largest opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The debate sparked after the Vice President Dr Mahmudu Bawumia announced at a town hall meeting on Tuesday, August 18, 2020, that government initiated 17,334 projects in different parts of the country with about 8,746 of them duly completed and work is currently ongoing for the remaining ones.

However, the opposition NDC says, the government is simply taking credits for projects initiated by erstwhile administrations and other private organizations. According to the party, the Pokuase interchange, Obestebi Lamptey interchange, Tamale interchange among other developmental projects were initiated by the Mahama led administration.

Although these arguments may be a medium of campaigning for votes on the part of both political parties, the most important thing is being ignored which is the progress of Ghana in the long run.

The game of politics played in this country usually overlooks the interest of the Ghanaian people in the long run. Both parties keep jabbing each other and initiating projects that best suit their political interest.

Be it free SHS, planting for food and jobs, provision of one million jobs, a compilation of new voters register and every other developmental project initiated by any of these two political parties is not only to score political points but to develop the country and ensure better living conditions for the citizenry.

It is high time the opposition parties in this country re-define their strategy for criticizing the government. As it stands, every political party has the potential to win elections and take over governance of this country thus, it is important for politicians no matter which ticket they belong, to reconsider their conduct when they are in opposition.

At the end of the day, the decision lies with the electorate to decide who is in the best position to lead the country hence, it will be in the interest of all stakeholders involved, to be honest on their policies to the Ghanaian people.

Meanwhile, in the build-up to the December polls, it is expected that more policies are rolled out by these political parties who seek to serve the interest of the country.
