Mole National Park, located northwest of Ghana on a grassland savannah at Wa East is Ghana’s largest wildlife refuge. It is situated in the heart of the pristine Guinea Savannah Woodland ecosystem with low hills and escarpments. The park covers an area of about 4,840 kilometres.
The park’s lands were set aside as a wildlife refuge in 1958. In 1971 the human population of the area was relocated and the lands were designated a national park. The park’s entrance is reached through the nearby town of Larabanga. The Lovi and Mole Rivers are ephemeral rivers flowing through the park. Visiting the Mole national park is an adventure and an experience to always cherish and remember – it is indeed a walking safari.
The main attraction in Mole national park is the African elephant, for which Mole is famous. The African elephant can be distinguished by its larger sized ears that drape over its shoulders. Aside from this main attraction, the park boasts of other animals including 93 species of mammals. There are monkeys, antelopes, crocodiles, lizards, hippos, buffalos, zebras and different kinds of birds. Taking a walk in the evening is a delight – you get the chance to get close to the elephants and other animals, with armed rangers on hand to accompany and guide.
The park is considered a primary African preserve for the antelope species including kob, defassa waterbuck, roan, hartebeest, bushbuck, and two kinds of duikers – the red duiker and yellow-backed duiker. The olive baboon, the black-and-white colobus monkey, the green vervet, and patas monkey are a few of the known species of monkeys resident in the park. Of the 33 known species of reptiles, the slender-snouted and dwarf crocodile are found in the park.
Conveniently situated on top of a hill in the park is the Mole Motel, the only accommodation located within the park. The motel boasts of a swimming pool and other luxurious necessities. The strategic location of the motel gives a relaxed viewing of the animals in the park. Birds, lizards and on a couple of occasions, a family of warthogs can be seen from the motel. Hyenas, lions and leopards are uncommon but were once there.
Among the 344 listed bird species are the martial eagle, the white-headed and palm-nut vultures, saddle-billed storks, herons, egrets, the Abyssinian roller, the violet turaco, various shrikes and the red-throated bee-eater.
