GHANA- A Ghanaian fishing boat with Korean Captain and 4 Crew were kidnapped near Ghana by pirates.
Three Chinese, one Russian and one Korean who was the captain were on board the tuna boat, the Atlantic Princess, jointly owned by Ghana and China. The pirates were eight in number and armed.
According to KBS World Radio News, 30 people were on board the fishing boat when the kidnapping took place at about 3:00 a.m. Thursday, Korean time about 120 kilometres southeast of Tema port.
According to security analysts at Dryad Global, one speedboat with eight pirates approached the Ghanaian vessel which was 65 nautical miles south of Tema, Ghana. The vessel reported that five armed men had fired at the ship before boarding the vessel and sailing it a further 40 nautical miles to the south.
The Ghanaian fishing boat kidnapping by the pirates is the 56th pirate incident during five incidents in the Gulf of Guinea during 2021, according to Dryad.
Korea has set up an emergency task force to secure their timely release from the pirates.
The International Maritime Organization stated that they are doing everything in their capacity to halt the attack and kidnapping in the Gulf of Guinea.
The International Maritime Organization is also seeking collaboration from governments, stakeholders, United Nations and institutions to tackle the situation.
