Family of Akua Denteh deny relation with the abuser; express satisfaction at arrest

GHANA- Wednesday, August 5, 2020/–Abuser of late Akua Denteh, who was lynched to death on basis of being a witch, has been denied by the family as being a part of them.

The abuser, Latifa Bumaye after her arrest in a video that went viral on social media claimed that Akua Denteh was her grandmother and the attack on her was influenced by spiritual forces as she claims she was possessed.

However, spokesperson for the family Salami Mahama has debunked those claims and is calling on the public to dispel them.

He said “she is nowhere related to us, we don’t know her and she should stop peddling lies”.

He further expressed satisfaction “that the police have been able to affect some arrest and we still need the police not to relent in their effor5ts to apprehend the others”.

The primary suspect of the lynching is will appear before the Bole Magistrate court today, Wednesday, August 5, 2020. The suspect, Sherina Mohammed, popularly known as Alhajia was arrested at Yeji in the Bono East region by police in Salaga.

Seven persons have so far been arrested in connection to the lynching. five of them who are male are currently being charged by the Bole Magistrate Court on the of conspiracy and murder.

Akua Denteh was lynched to death in Kafaba, East Gonja in the Northern region on allegations of witchcraft by soothsayer, Sherina Mohammed, popularly known as Alhajia.

 Since the act several bodies have spoken against the act, including the president Nana Akufo-Addo who said the act “disfigured” the country. He condemned the act and called on the police to apprehend the culprits.

A foundation has since been established in her honor by the Savannah Regional Coordinating Council to advocate for future acts of human rights violations.
