SOUTH AFRICA- Saturday, July 4, 2020,/ https://africanpostonline.com/ Africans celebrate Gillian Mallouw for her achievement in the navy and setting the pace as the first female submarine navigator on the continent.

Although the navy is male-dominated, Gillian Mallouw, 29, from Port Elizabeth in the South African Navy becomes the first woman in Africa to achieve such a great milestone.

Mallouw, a lieutenant naval officer in the South African Navy has set the record to challenge the perception that women can achieve anything they want to do in a world dominated by men.

“It doesn’t matter whether you are a male or female, all that matters is hard work and determination,” she says. “There are lots of women out there who are not allowed to read or drive, and it does feel great that I am in a position without limitations – except for myself – to move forward,” Mallouw added.

According to Mallouw, she decided to join the navy after completing school when she was in grade 9.

“I was already exposed to the navy as I joined the Sea Cadets in Grade 7 and this taught me so much about the maritime industry,” Mallouw says.

She has been in the navy for ten years now, and her station is at Simon’s Town naval base.

Her remarkable achievement and success story has attracted a lot of positive comments on social media as many congratulated her.
