Roadmap for reopening of schools underway as Ministry of Education inaugurates committee

The Minister of Education, Hon. Matthew Opoku Prempeh has today commissioned a committee to draw a roadmap for the resumption of pre-tertiary institutions.

The president Nana Akufo-Addo in his address on Sunday, August 16, 2020 said that consultations were on going to reopen schools.

According to the press release signed by the Press Secretary to the Minister, Rodney Nkrumah Boateng “this follows the address to the nation by President Akufo-Addo on Sunday 16th August 2020, which included government’s intention to consider the re-opening of schools following the shutdown in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic breakout”.

The press release highlighted that the “Minister charged the committee to bring their expertise and experience to bear in ensuring consultation with all stakeholders on the way forward on all the relevant issues.”

The committee is chaired by the former Minister of Education and current chairman of the GETFund Board of Trustees, Prof. Dominic Fobih.

Other representatives on the committee include;

  • Ministry of Education
  • Ghana Education Service
  • UNICEF
  • Private school sector
  • Parents

“The committee is expected to report to the Minister on Monday, 21st September, 2020 on it’s recommendations”, as contained in the press release.

Schools were closed in March 2020 in line with measures to reduce spread of the Coronavirus when the country recorded its first case.

In line with the easing of restrictions however, final year students in second cycle institutions and second year gold track students were asked to return to school to complete their exit examinations and semester respectively.

The students were however urged to observe strictly, all safety protocols put in place by the government.

Final year students of tertiary institutions were also asked to return to complete the academic year.

In his address on Sunday, the President asked the University of Cape Coast, the University of Health and Allied Sciences, Technical Universities, and some other Colleges to return to school to close the academic year.

These institutions did not complete the semester online like other tertiary institutions.
