Manchester United Will Maintain Maguire’s Captaincy

The Officials of Manchester United have decided to maintain defender, Harry Maguire’s captaincy in a meeting, after he was found guilty of three charges by a Greek Court. He was found guilty of assaulting a Police Officer, swearing and resisting arrest and attempted bribery following an incident in Mykonos last week.

He was arrested together with his brother and a friend after a fight broke out during his holiday in Mykonos. Maguire claimed that his sister was injected with a ‘rape drug’. The 27-year-old player was sentenced to a 21-month prison suspension after he was found guilty in a trial on the Island of Syros. Maguire has made his intentions known that he is going to appeal the verdict. He said after the trial, “I remain strong and confident regarding our innocence in this matter. If anything, myself, my family and my friends are the victims.

Southgate, manager for the English National team dropped Maguire from his squad for the Nations League after he received Maguire’s suspended jail sentence. But Manchester United have decided to stand by their captain through this rough patch and have no intentions of stripping the captaincy from him.

In an official statement they released yesterday, Man U said, “Manchester United notes the verdict of the Greek Court today”. “It should be noted that the prosecution confirmed charges and provided their evidence late on the day before the trial, giving the defence team minimal time to digest them and prepare”. “On this basis, along with the substantial body of evidence refuting the charges, Harry Maguire’s legal team will now appeal to the verdict, to allow a full and fair hearing at a later date”.

Maguire joined Manchester United in 2019 after signing a six-year deal with the side. He made his debut on August 11 in Manchester United’s 4-0 victory against Chelsea, receiving the Man of the Match award. Maguire was named captain of English side by Manager Ole Gunnar following Ashley Young’s departure to Inter Milan.
