ACCRA, Ghana – Monday, June 1, 2020/ https://africanpostonline.com/—A picture shows thieves dug a tunnel into the Shoprite Liquors at Newtown Junction stealing alcoholic drinks worth R300 000 in the night according to a local news report.
The Shoprite Group’s Loss Control Manager, Oswald Meiring, believes that the perpetrators undertook the activity 10 days before liquor sales were allowed as recorded on CCTV cameras on 21 May.
South Africa placed an embargo on the sales of alcohol two months ago as a measure to combat the spread of covid-19.
President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa announced the resumption of alcohol sales starting from 1 June. He added that sales of alcohol will only be permitted between 09:00 and 17:00 but on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
The drinking of the alcohol at sales points and in public is illegal and can only be drunk at home.
Pictures and videos show long queues outside shops in South Africa as people wait to buy the liquor. However, bulk-buying would not be permitted according to the traders and associations Basa Chief Executive Patricia Pillay.
President Cyril Ramaphosa said he agreed that no school should reopen unless all the required measures were in place.
